When is a good time to curl your hair? right after blowdrying or wait?

I have kinda long thick hair and it takes a while to blow dry and when im done blow drying its a bit damp not much but enough. I just got a big barrel curling iron and am trying to get body and waves. i tried once didnt come out right. so what i did was put mousse in my hair after blowdrying curled it and then when the curl is done heating roll it back up with my finger and pin it and put a bit of hair spray. now should i wait to curl til after my hair is totally dry? and am i curling it the right way? i pin up my hair and start in the back but its hard to reach there. and then i move to the sides and then the front. it seems to take forever but i want to start styling my hair instead of always putting it up in a ponytail or bun. thanks for any suggestions.

dont curl your hair when you have gel, or mousse in it or if its damp cuz u'll fry it so i would say wait till its dry and when you take the curling iorn out of ur hair from curling it then spray it with hair spray.
