i would try wetting her hair then adding lots of conditioner in it then try to comb it out from the bottom and work your way to the top without rinsing it

Yikes-

I suggest first to wash the hair, then coat it in an oily substance. This will make it *carefully* combable. Yeah, it might not smell too good afterwars, but it'll work.

Other than shaving it all off, try a spray on detangler. How old's your daughter? If she's really young, try a Johnson %26amp; Johnson detangler that's safe and gentle for little ones.

If she's older (teen) try one of the more "adult" brands. Work section by section. VERY SMALL sections at a time. Spray each section throughly. Start at the bottom and work out the knots at the bottom, then slowly work your way up the section until you reach the scalp. When I've got knots in my hair (though it's never been as bad as you describe) that's how I do it.

Good luck, and have patience - you'll get them out!

use a leave n conditioner and a comb.. a strong one. .. some pain killers and alot of patience on your part.

best way to get these out is to us a product that has silicone in it or a product that is really oily,or use conditioner, apply to the whole head of hair an start with ONE dread mess at a time, use a comb an start to comb it out from the ends to the roots, take each dreaded mess one at a time this will take awhile, but you will get there

Cut them, take her to a salon and have them removed. If she refuses, you'd have to put a ton of hair conditioner, oils, to loosen it up, but it's almost impossible to get her hair back to normal, and it's painful to fingers, on top of that if you are patient and manage to get her hair straight, she will have very damaged hair, not attractive, you don't have to shave her head off, you can cut them in a way, that her hair will still be there, leave an inch or 2 if allowed. If you decide to work with it, it will take you hours to get it back to normal, Good luck

The very best way is to shampoo and drench in conditioner, rinse..and use a hair pick (rather than a comb or brush) to slowly comb them out. Start at the ENDS of the hair and work your way up. If you start at the top of the head, every matt has to go through the next one, forming a huge horrible mess.

Also, give HER the job of combing. Have you ever noticed that it hurts less to do something painful to yourself (like taking out a splinter) especially combing your hair, than it is if someone else is doing it.

Lastly if it keeps happening, go short. Let her know that if you find knots in her hair...say three more times...you are cutting it short. Don't make this sound like a mean threat, or she will hate the short hair, look at it as a punishment. Be very careful how you approach this conversation. Ask her if she wants it short. If she says yes, go for it! Make it a day outting! If she says no, say, "Okay. I will give you another chance to care for your long hair. But if you keep letting it go you have shown you want long hair but not enough to care for it. Then we will choose a short style together. I think you will look great either way!"

Rub some conditioner into the brush and starting from the bottom of her hair start brushing.

add more conditioner as needed.

Keep it up till all are gone.

on your next trip to the store look for Johnson's and Johnson's No More Tears. (this has been around since 1970)

Use this every time you pick up a brush for her hair.

I have the same problem with major matting and all in my hair.

I have been able to keep it down as an adult, but kids have so hard a time keeping up their hair.

I hope this helps.

Get her hair cut and tell her to never do this to her hair ever again. I've seen people, with dread locks, that actually had bugs crawling around......I just wouldn't have any hair style that you could not wash your hair with. Your scalp needs to stay clean or you will develop tons of problems.

I use Johnson's childrens detangling spray for my daughter. She gets really BAD BED HEAD.. It is the only one that I have found that works. I have switched many times, and now stuck with Johnsons!!!

My daughter has big humongous rats in her hair. How do you get them out?

1. If she swims a lot, use Infusium 21 after she gets out of the pool. It will help detangle a LOT!

2. If she has longer hair (more than 3 inches longer than her shoulders) consider cutting it to the shoulders. The longer the hair, the more tangles (or so I've experienced...)

3. Rather than ripping through the hair with a brush, first wet it, then use either a comb or something almost in between a comb and a brush (if you go to any hair place you should see it, it looks like an F with lots of extra lines in between the horizontal lines). Spray- in conditioner is great for this step so you don't break the hair, and that particiular comb/brush will help especially if she has curly hair.

4. Conditioning is a big deal. If she just shampoos and doesn't condition, her hair will get tangled.

Hope that helps!

I had the same problem as a child, and I remembering it hurts so bad. I used to get the rats, like dreads under my hair, above my neck. My Mom used to use Johnson and Johnson, no more tangles. It is the best stuff in the world for that, your daughter will thank you. When you spary it on the hair, it literally takes seconds to work, you can practically comb the tangles right out. Good Luck.
